Online Training Courses

The following online, non-credit courses and modules are currently available at no charge to students, faculty, and staff affiliated with the University of Minnesota.

Some of the research courses and modules are offered through the University's School of Public Health, and focus on applications pertinent to public health practice and research. You may be asked to complete a one-time registration process and/or to log in with your University internet (x.500) ID and password in order to access these courses and modules.

The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) Online Training Modules train coordinators who support primary investigators and teams that conduct research with human subjects. The comprehensive online training modules help ensure quality research practices, while creating a career development pathway for CRCs. 

This online tutorial is designed for students in healthcare fields, health care professionals, faculty, and anyone interested in evidence-based practice. This tutorial comprises two lessons that cover the 5-step process for evidence-based practice, and a number of case scenarios that allow the learner to apply the process.

Introduction to Clinical Research Methodologies

This series of online courses provides an orientation for health professions students, fellows, and practitioners to the following aspects of clinical research:

Since 2003, identified faculty, staff, students, and volunteers have been required to complete training regarding the privacy of health information. The University's HIPAA Privacy Training consists of a total of three courses:

  • Introduction to HIPAA Privacy and Security Video (video format)
  • Privacy and Confidentiality in Research
  • Privacy and Confidentiality in the Clinical Setting

This introductory module covers a few basic mathematics concepts that are central to statistics.

This online training provides an overview of epidemiology, key terms, and examines the role of epidemiologists in public health practice. It includes some case studies and a discussion of how epidemiological studies are related to public health issues.

This free online self-paced course, offered through the NIH's Office of Clinical Research, trains physicians, scientists, medical and dental students, nurses, public health officials, and others conducting or planning a career in clinical research on how to effectively and safely conduct clinical research. The course focuses on the spectrum of clinical research and the research process by highlighting biostatistical and epidemiologic methods, study design, protocol preparation, patient monitoring, quality assurance, ethical and legal issues, and much more.

To become eligible as a principal investigator at the University of Minnesota, you must complete the RCR Core Curriculum. The online workshop addresses basic principles based on key concepts and best practices of research integrity. Topics include: social and professional responsibilities, reporting misconduct, mentoring, authorship, plagiarism, peer review, fiscal responsibilities, intellectual property, and research data management.
