Biostatistical Design and Analysis Center
BDAC provides statistical support, collaboration, and data management services from study design to final analysis and publication of results. Services listed below reflect the usual order of statistical support provided to a study. There are three methods available for funding BDAC services:
- BDAC personnel are written into a grant for reasonable levels of support.
- Funding through an investigator's department.
- Hourly rates for projects without grant funding or for grants that do not include support for BDAC personnel.
Investigators should generally contact BDAC at least 3 weeks in advance.
Grant Proposal Preparation
All pre-award consultation must be initiated 30 days or more before the internal due date of the application. Investigators are encouraged to contact BDAC early in the grant preparation process.

- Study design consultation and evaluation
- Sample size and power calculations
- Formulating hypotheses to address specific aims
- Writing statistical analysis sections for grant proposal
- Review and edits of grant proposal revisions
- Rates
- No charge to University of Minnesota researchers if BDAC personnel are written into the grant for a reasonable level of support for the planned analysis or if granted waiver by Scientific Advisory Committee
- $87.00 / hour for University of Minnesota researchers
- $120.00 / hour + indirect costs (50.5%) for clients outside the University of Minnesota
Data Management
- Services
- Database design using MS ACCESS, Oracle, MySQL and other data management packages
- Database dictionary and documentation
- Design of web-based interfaces for data entry
- Quality control programs to monitor data integrity
- Data quality reports for DSMB review
- Integration of data from various sources
- Database backup
- Data extraction for analysis
- Rates
- $78.00 / hour for University of Minnesota researchers
- $120.00 / hour + indirect costs (50.5%) for clients outside the University of Minnesota
Statistical Design and Analysis
- Services
- Clinical trial monitoring and interim analysis for DSMB review (see also CTM)
- Data analysis as specified in the study protocol
- Additional exploratory analyses as determined by the research team
- Tables, graphs and summarization of analysis results
- Interpretation of analysis results
- Rates
- $78.00 / hour for University of Minnesota researchers
- $120.00 / hour + indirect costs (50.5%) for clients outside the University of Minnesota
Manuscript Preparation and Review
- Services
- Writing statistical methods and contributing to results and discussion sections
- Review of statistical analysis results
- Edits and review of manuscript
- Responses to reviewer comments and questions
BDAC statisticians who have contributed to analysis design and interpretation of a project, regardless of funding source, are typically included as co-authors on manuscripts.
